What is the AVID Program?

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Established more than 30 years ago with one teacher in one classroom AVID today, impacts more than700,000 students in 45 states and 16 other countries/territories.

AVID operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s kindergarten through higher education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math
skills across all content areas.

What AVID Does

Simply, AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

How AVID Works

AVID brings research‐based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions in elementarysecondary and higher education. The AVID System annually provides more than 30,000 educators with training and methodologies that develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas throughout the entire campus, in what we call Schoolwide AVID.

  • Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
  • Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
  • Creates a positive peer group for students
  • Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination

As a result, policymakers and educators now consider AVID's mission to be an essential strategy for closing the achievement gap, making college access and success available to all students.

AVID’s Impact

For more than 30 years, AVID has prepared students for college readiness and success. From its beginnings in one classroom with 32 students in San Diego, it now impacts the lives of hundreds of thousands of students throughout the United States and the world. At its sites, AVID affects leadership, systems, instruction,
and culture.

AVID is not just another program…
at its heart,
AVID is a philosophy -
Hold students accountable to the highest standards,
provide academic and social support,
and they will rise to the challenge.

If you have not completed the AVID Boosters Form that was included in the Apache Days registration packet, we encourage you to submit it ASAP. When considering our donation campaign, please evaluate the total value of the worthy AVID benefits that will be offered to your children at no cost and year round. With our growing number of AVID students this year, it will be important that we start off the year with an appropriate operating budget so we may plan to provide enhanced programs for the entire year to our AVID students. This could also eliminate the need for parents to engage in fund-raisers throughout the year ahead.
A heartfelt thanks to those of you that have generously submitted your donations to benefit our thriving AVID program.

  1. Complete your AVID Boosters Form included in the Apache Days packet, link here.
  2. Make donation checks payable to AHS and write “AVID Boosters” & student ID # in the memo line.
  3. Mail in your completed form and donation to the address provided on the form or
  4. Bring your completed form and donation to our Boosters meeting.
